Town Crier on Friday, November 5, 2010.

Happy Friday!
November 5, 2010

Parents and Guardians,
Our administrators would like you to be aware of the following message which was sent out during homerooms today:

It has come to our attention that several students are engaging in behavior that is not appropriate and is considered a serious infraction of MCMS as well as Carteret County Schools’ Guidelines for Disciplinary Behavior. The behavior we are referring to is known as “pantsing” or “depantsing.” Students who engage in this behavior put their hands on other student’s shorts and pull them down.

This behavior falls clearly under the definition of harassment – in fact it is perceived as sexual harassment and will not be tolerated at MCMS. Harassment is defined as “acts that are unwanted, unwelcomed, and uninvited that demean, threaten or offend the victim and result in a hostile environment.

Please be aware that all reports that our administrative team deals with will be taken seriously. Because of the violation of the school policy, appropriate consequences, including suspension and police involvement will take place.

There is no room at this school for behavior like this. We know that we can expect better. We also know that when we move through middle school, the expectation is to behave as young adults. Ms. Bell previously referred to everyone’s space as a bubble – we need to keep our hands off one another as well as off one another’s property at all times. Saying things like “I was just joking” will not be accepted.

If this behavior has happened to you, you need to report it to a teacher. If you have witnessed this behavior, you need to report it to a teacher.

MCMS is a great school. Most students and all of our staff report that they feel safe here. We need to make sure that sexual harassment stops, immediately, so that we can all be a part of a safe school environment.

We recognize that most of our students behave in ways that we can be proud of, most of the time. Because of the serious nature of this particular behavior, we want parents to be aware and suggest that you follow up with a discussion at home.
