To Parents of Teen Drivers/
Highway Patrol Safety Seminar for Parents -
What is happening in the world of the teen drivers?
With all the education teens receive regarding the responsibility of being
behind the wheel and safety precautions now built into vehicles, why aren’t
the number of teen fatalities dropping? State Trooper Jeff Collins of
the N.C. Highway Patrol will present “To Parents of Teen Drivers”,
Thursday, June 2 at West Carteret High School in the media center,
beginning at 6:00 PM. Doors will open at 5:30 with light refreshments.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is taking a different approach
by offering early education for parents, especially those with
preteens who have not taken drivers education. Through this
informative session, parents will learn the problem areas the patrol
is seeing, different causes of teen crashes, and the roles and
responsibilities of parents in helping the teen and preteen driver.
According to Trooper Collins, “Although we begin in the early years
educating students about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, we do not
teach them about driving safety until they begin driver’s education.
It is time to rethink how we are approaching this issue. Parents need
to take an active role in the early education process.”
Parents of teen and pre-teen drivers are encouraged to attend. This
event is sponsored by Carteret County 4-H and Cooperative Extension
and is free to the public regardless of the school your child attends.
Included with the videos is a discussion and question and answer
session. The video helps parents understand the losses suffered by
others, and encouragement to take an active role to prevent becoming a
statistic.
