2010 Rising 9th Grade Timeline – Here are dates to remember……….
March 23rd 7:30am – 12:30pm Registration with each Rising 9th grade
Student Day 1 at MMS with WCHS Counselors
March 24th 7:30am – 12:30pm Registration Meeting with each Rising 9th Grade
Students Day 2 at MMS with WCHS Counselors
April 30th 9am-12:30pm Rising 9th Grade Student Shadow Program at WCHS

Registration Forms Sent HOME – Our current 6th and 7th graders brought home their registration form to register for the 2010-2011 school year classes on Monday. This sheet should be returned by Friday, March 26th.
Parents were also called on the Alert Now telephone system from MCMS.

Band Announcements – Updated/Tuesday, March 23, 2010
• The MCMS Percussion Ensemble will travel to Chesapeake, VA this weekend to compete in the Atlantic Indoor Association Championships. This will be their final competitive performance of the season, and the group hopes that it will be their strongest show yet! All percussion ensemble members should turn in their permission slips by Friday. We rehearse this Friday after school from 3:00-5:00 PM.
• The MCMS Band Cookie Dough Fundraiser was kicked off last week! Students, please make sure this information makes it home! Orders and all money are due April 1st.
• Congratulations to all band students who participated in the Carteret County Honors Band this past weekend. Twenty MCMS band students rehearsed for a total of 9 hours of the course of 2 days to prepare a very challenging concert. They were directed by a guest conductor and worked hard to perfect the music, and performed a remarkable performance. We are so proud of these band students who represent the best of the best in Carteret County.

Sports Eligibility – Monday, March 29 is the day Mrs. Bell will check grades for sports eligibility. This date will decide if students may remain on the baseball, softball, and golf team. Track try-outs will be on March 30. Your grades must be passing as of March the 29th to try out for the team. Remind students to check their egrades regularly and stay after school to catch up on/redo assignments.

Track Sign-ups – Attention any 7th or 8th graders interested in track, there will be a sign-up sheet in the cafeteria until Thursday.
The first day of try-outs will be on Tuesday, March 30th until 4:30 pm. You must have a current physical and insurance in order to participate. You must have passing grades as well. Be ready to run!!

Cheerleaders - Cheerleaders... get ready to party... our end of the year party will be at the Watermark on Thursday, April 1st from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Time and cost information to come! Stay tuned for more details and make plans to attend.

Baseball – Our baseball game that was canceled yesterday will be played at Beaufort Middle School on, Wednesday, March 24th.
The baseball team will have a home game at Swinson Park on Thursday, March 25th at 4:00 challenging Broad Creek Middle School. Come out and support the Mighty Minutemen.

Softball – Our softball game that was canceled yesterday will be played at Beaufort Middle School on Wednesday, March 24th. Please note the change!
Our next home game will be played right here again at MCMS on Thursday, March 25th at 4:00 with Downeast.

The Brad Sneeden Marine Science Academy - Applications are now available in the front office for the Brad Sneeden Marine Science Academy that will be a week long camp from June 14-18. The Theme this year will be Careers. Deadline for applications are due by Friday, April 23, 2010. There will be fifty (50) applicants accepted from the Carteret County Public School System. Applicants must be entering the 7th, 8th, or 9th grade in the fall of 2010. Students who took part in the Academy last year are not eligible to apply this year.
Stop by the office for more information and pick up the three page application.

Geography Bee – Steven Tulevech, 7th grade, will compete in the state level of the National Geographic Bee, sponsored by Google and Plum Creek. The State Bee will be held on Friday, April 9th at the J. E. Broyhill Civic Center in Lenoir. Good Luck, Steven!

Summer Volleyball Camp – Any 6th or 7th grade girl interested in going to a summer volleyball camp, please see Mr. Lewis or Miss Savage for details.
Yearbook Sales – Yearbooks sales end on Friday, March 26th. Ordering now is the only way to guarantee that you will receive a yearbook in June.

Yearbook Meeting – We have a yearbook meeting today, Tuesday, March 23rd. Please plan to stay until 4:15.

Birdhouses for Sale - Buy a birdhouse and help our feathered friends and our school! Students from Ms. Lawrence and Mr. Butlers classes are making and selling birdhouses in order to raise funds for classroom materials and supplies. Not only are our students learning a hands-on approach to building but they are giving our feathered friends a nice home and raising money for their classrooms. The bird houses are on sale for $20. If you are interested in purchasing a bird house, please contact Ms. Lawrence or Mr. Butler at the school by calling 252-726-1126.

Radical Readers –
Warrior Heir Committee – Warrior Heir will meet on Thursday, March 25 until 4:00. Bring your information on your selected book as a possibility for our summer read 2010. If you own a copy of the book, awesome- bring it. If not, check out a copy from the media center. For the activities we will be completing, it would be a good idea to re-read it or refresh your memory on the major details. Ms. Smith and I look forward to working with you to plan our pod casts. We will tape our pod casts on April 1, so plan for that meeting to run to 4:30. Awesome job on the PBS celebration!

Media Mania News …. Don’t get caught without a BOOK!
Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss! Checkout the Media Center for a great selection of Dr. Seuss books as we celebrate his birthday this month.

Media March... Mark your calendars for a book-movie yard sale event in the media center and courtyard on Saturday, March 27, 8-11. Bring in your used books and movies you would like to donate to the media center for this effort. Please bring in your items for donation by Thursday, March 25. A flier went home earlier this week and is also available on line on the main web page.

2010 Youth Entrepreneurship Camp – Open to rising 7th graders through rising 9th graders:
This camp is sponsored by Carteret Community College and NC REAL Enterprises and will run from June 21-25, 2010 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM. For more information stop by the school office and pick up your application or contact Betsy DeCampo at (252) 222-6116.

Bright Ideas – What a Bright idea! The MCMS Office is selling CFLs (Compact fluorescent light bulbs) for $2.00 each. Most stores sell them for $4.00 to $6.00 each, so this is a quite a deal. We have 75 and 100 watt bulbs available, and 100% of the funds from this fundraiser stay with MCMS. Please see any staff member in the office to purchase your CFLs today!

Earn $$$ for MCMS - A big thank you to everyone who linked their Harris Teeter VIC card to MCMS last year! Please remember to link your Harris Teeter VIC cards to MCMS again for this school year as well. All you have to do is go to www.harristeeter.com and select the Community Tab, then Together In Education (on the left side). At the bottom of that page click on Link your VIC card to your school now! Just fill out the next page, entering our school code of 7643, and you’re all set to help MCMS earn much needed funds for the 2009-2010 school year. Lowe’s Gift Cards – Lowe’s Gift Cards are now available to purchase in the school office for $50.00. Morehead Middle receives 10% of this when one is purchased from our school. Come by the office soon and get yours!
